Surrey is an affluent county with a service based economy closely tied to London. It has more organisation and company headquarters than any other county in the UK. Electronics manufacturers Nikon, Whirlpool, Canon, Toshiba, Samsung and Philips are housed there. Kia Motors and Toyota UK also have HQs in Surrey, as do drug companies Pfizer and Sanofi-Aventis and oil giant Esso. Some of the largest, consumer goods multinationals in the world have their UK and/or European headquarters there, including Unilever, Procter & Gamble, Superdrug, Nestle, SC Johnson, Kimberly-Clark and Colgate-Palmolive. NGOs including WWF UK & Compassion in World Farming are also based there.
Three major motorways pass through the county, connecting serviced offices in Surrey to the rest of the UK. The M25, the London Orbital, runs through the county and connects among others to the M1, M11, M20, M26, M4 and M40. The motorway runs in close proximity to London Heathrow Airport and can be used to access Gatwick, Stansted and Luton Airports and the Channel Tunnel service. The M3 connects London to Southampton and the M23 which connects Croydon to Brighton.
Surrey is connected by railway to Central London via national routes: the Waterloo to Reading Line, South Western Main Line, Portsmouth Direct Line, Sutton and Mole Valley Lines (from Horsham, West Sussex itself on the Arun Valley Line from Littlehampton) and the Brighton Main Line.
