Shropshire’s economy is centred on five towns: the county town of Shrewsbury, culturally and historically important, located in the centre of the county; Telford, a new town in the east which was constructed around a number of older towns, Oswestry, Bridgnorth and Ludlow in the south.
The Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty covers roughly a quarter of the county, Shropshire is one of England's most rural and sparsely populated counties.
In more recent years, the economy of Shropshire has become more service orientated. Industry is mostly found in Telford, Oswestry, Whitchurch, Market Drayton and Shrewsbury; smaller industrial estates can also be found in most of the market towns and former airfields in rural areas. Shrewsbury has become a centre for distribution and warehousing. Due to its central location and access to the regional road network, Shrewsbury would be the ideal base for a serviced office in Shropshire.
A new rail freight facility has been built in Telford, with the intention of extending the line to Stafford, with the hope of opening the freight terminal up to the East Midlands and the north, and re-connecting Newport to the rail network.
Well-known companies in Shropshire include Müller Dairy (UK) Ltd in Market Drayton. The Royal Air Force has two bases at RAF Cosford and RAF Shawbury, and charity PDSA has their head office in Priorslee, Telford.
