The landscape of Derbyshire varies from typical arable country in the flat lands to the south of Derby, to the hill farming of the high gritstone moorlands of the southern Pennines. This topology and geology has had a fundamental effect on Derbyshire's development throughout its history. The industrial revolution increased demand for building stone, and is still a major industry with a lot of the stone supplied as crushed stone for road building and concrete manufacture, which is then moved by rail.
Nationally famous companies in Derbyshire are Rolls Royce, one of the world's leading aerospace companies. Thorntons are just south of Alfreton and Toyota, who have one of the UK's largest car manufacturing plants are in Burnaston. Buxton Water is bottled in the county.
Serviced offices in Derbyshire are served by The M1 motorway; the north to south motorway connecting London to Leeds, and the M6 which runs from junction 19 of the M1 at the Catthorpe Interchange, near Rugby via Birmingham then heads north, passing Stoke-on-Trent, Manchester, Preston, Lancaster and Carlisle.
